Show Notes

Mary Murtagh Director of Mary Murtagh Media Ltd.

Media training has been around for a while now, and yet it’s still a process that many in the public eye try and resist going through.

The simple fact is that as social media has grown significantly and it has become even easier to share an article or repost a snippet, a qoute or a video clip of your best and worst moments in the public spotlight. For this simple reason, media training for organizations is now more important than ever.

One bad interview question used to have the life cycle of being replayed a few times on TV. Now, that clip lives on YouTube forever, resurfacing each time the organization, individual interviewed, or the general subject matter comes up.

Journalists are trained to ask tough questions—so spokespeople and anyone else who might come into contact with a reporter should be trained too. It’s a matter of being prepared. Being direct, answering questions when you can—and knowing what to say when you can’t, and understanding how images and appearance can add or detract from an interview are all part of media training

Media training is a specialized form of communication training for interacting with media. The goal of media training is to assist and prepare you for your role in representing your company or organization. You'll learn how to predict questions, avoid common traps, and focus on delivering your key messages.
